This semester, learning Japanese was a great experience. My professor, Fuse Sensei was very helpful in thoroughly explaining concepts quite enthusiastically in class. I love being able to now put basic sentences together to explain everyday things-I just need to keep up the practice. Meeting my classmates was fun as well. Learning about some aspects of Japanese culture was very interesting, like during the Kyudo presentation, the culture event in O'Shag, and at a career panel I attended in Indianapolis. I also hope to learn enough next semester during First Year Japanese I and through my own studies to understand more anime without needing to use subtitles as much.

Some of the people I've met through the Japanese Program here have become good friends! I am excited to see where next semester leads. Until then!

Blog Post 10!

I am not familiar with Kyudo, but I think it is some form of traditional Japanese martial arts, like a combination of Judo or Kendo. I remember in class it was mentioned as similar to archery, though I am sure there are difference culturally compared to the West and in Japan.

In order to become good at Kyudo, a significant amount of practice, discipline, and perseverance is required, as is required of becoming proficient in any martial arts.

I would as the question of how Kyudo compares to archery in the West, and if there were/are any influences shared between the two cultures. I would also like to know the evolution of how Kyudo was used in different wars.

Blog Post 9!

This week I watched an episode of ワンピース, and I was able to pick up on dialogue about where buildings/people/things were (in the instances where it happened) due to learning the new vocab and grammar for this week, which was cool. In the other episodes I've watched within the past week, I've also been able to pick up on more and more without relying as heavily on subtitles (though it is still not much).

今日、私はナルトの一話を見ました。ナルトが大好きです。高校生の時、よくナルトを見ました。ナルトの音楽はとてもいいです。The outro song "Wind" by Akeboshi is my favorite song from the Naruto anime. In this specific episode, Kakashi passed team 7. I already knew what was going on because I've seen the episode before, but watching it in Japanese without subtitles helped me pay more attention to the conversational grammar vs. dictionary grammar.

Blog Post 6!

For the video this week, I chose to watch an episode of Vinland Saga from the first season. I watched this anime originally a few years ago, but with subtitles, so watching it now without the subtitles made me pay attention to the voices more. I was surprised at the amount of words I recognized, but also realized the significant amount of grammar I lack to understand the full meaning. This is one of my favorite anime because of the storyline, action, and animation, and I definitely recommend watching!
